The three boxes, and what each one does
Most home setups have up to three separate devices that get lumped together as "the internet box." Knowing which is which makes every other fix on this page make sense.
- Modem — translates the signal coming from your ISP (cable, fiber, DSL) into something your home network can use. It has one job: get you online.
- Router — creates your actual home network, hands out addresses to your devices, and decides how traffic gets from your laptop to the internet and back.
- Access point — broadcasts WiFi. Often built into the router, but on mesh systems it's a separate job spread across multiple units.
Most ISP-provided boxes cram all three into one device. That's fine for a small apartment; it starts causing problems the moment your home is bigger than the signal can comfortably cover.
Why your WiFi actually drops
It's almost never "bad WiFi." It's usually one of these three things:
1. Too many devices on one band
Older routers broadcast on 2.4GHz (long range, slower, crowded — every smart plug and baby monitor uses it too) and 5GHz (shorter range, faster, less crowded). If your router auto-picks for you, it sometimes puts everything on the busy band. Look for separate network names like Home-2.4 and Home-5 in your router's app — if you see them, connect laptops and phones to the 5GHz one and leave smart-home gadgets on 2.4GHz.
2. Physical distance and walls
WiFi signal loses strength through walls, floors, and especially anything metal (mirrors, ductwork, appliances). If one room is consistently weak, that's a coverage problem, not a settings problem — a second access point or a mesh unit fixes it; fiddling with channel settings won't.
3. Channel congestion
In apartment buildings especially, your neighbors' routers are all shouting on the same handful of channels. Most router apps have an "auto channel" option — turning it on (instead of a manually-set channel from years ago) often clears up random slowdowns immediately.
Five-minute fixes worth doing right now
- Change the default admin password. Not your WiFi password — the one that logs into the router's settings page. Default admin passwords are public knowledge and the single most common way home networks get compromised.
- Turn on WPA3 (or WPA2 if WPA3 isn't offered). Check your WiFi security settings aren't still set to WEP or "Open" — both are trivially breakable.
- Set up a guest network. Nearly every router has one. Put visitors' phones and any device you don't fully trust (smart TVs, that one cheap camera) on it instead of your main network.
- Reboot on a schedule, not just when it breaks. Many routers have a scheduled-reboot option (e.g., 4am weekly). It sounds unnecessary until you realize half of "the internet is down" calls are fixed by exactly this.
- Update the firmware. One tap in most router apps. Security fixes and stability improvements both ship this way, and most people never do it.
When it's time for a mesh system
If you've done everything above and one part of the house is still a dead zone, that's a coverage problem a single router can't solve no matter how it's configured. Mesh systems (multiple small units placed around the house, all sharing one network name) are the standard fix — buy one that supports a wired backhaul between units if you can, since a wired connection between mesh nodes is dramatically more reliable than the units talking to each other over WiFi.
